alcohol free cosmetics
as a citizen in a country with the worlds largest muslim population, id never had this thoughts that my cosmetic products would contain that or this kind of alcohol.. is the contain allowed in my religion? and etc etc..
so, ive read that in cosmetic labeling, the term "alcohol," used by itself, refers to ethyl alcohol (also known as ethanol, or grain alcohol). Cosmetic products, including those labeled "alcohol free," may contain other alcohols, such as cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl, or lanolin alcohol.
so, im having this as reference http://www.ummahnews.co.uk/article.php?id=86 ..
Ethyl Alcohol / Ethanol / Methylated Spirits (contains 5 percent Methyl Alcohol and 95 percent Ethyl Alcohol) - Haraam, even in a small quantity, impermissible as it is generated from the fermentation of sugars from cane, forming the intoxicating element of all fermented liquors. it is used in many cosmetic agents both for men (Aftershave Lotion) and for female perfumes. it is absorbed through the skin. It then passes through the flesh into the blood vessels and finally mixes with the blood and circulates throughout the body. Once in the blood it is as good as if one has ingested through the mouth.
Cetyl Alcohol - halaal, a long chain alcohol which is solid hence obviously not drinkabale nor does it cause intoxication if at all ingested. Therefore, it is halal to use in cosmetic products. It is also not absorbed through the skin when applied as a cream.
phenoxyethanol - Halaal, not etyl based
Cetearyl alcohol - Halaal, is not really an "alcohol" such as ethyl or rubbing alcohol, which would dry the skin, but is an emulsifying wax made by combining fatty alcohols derived from vegetable sources.
Denatured Alcohol - Halaal, an industrial methylated spirit or surgical spirit (contains natural or synthesised ethanol and denaturing agent such as methanol or methylisobutyl ketone), so permissible for external use.
but anyways .. here http://islamqa.com/en/ref/10337 Shaykh ‘Abd al-Kareem al-Khudayr says that It is safer not to use beauty products that contain alcohol, because of the difference of opinion as to whether intoxicating substances are naajis (impure) or not. If one is forced to use them and the amount of alcohol contained is very small, then it is OK, in sha Allaah.
so leave that to urself.. u know ur own body..
